Graphics Interchange Format is a bitmap image format that supports animations. It was developed in 1987 and the ability for animated GIFs to loop was added in 1995. Due to its wide support and portability, it is popular on World Wide Web for memes and ads. Development of social networks has made GIF even more popular for logos, intros and short news.
